Sailing
The calm waters make Thailand an excellent place to have your first
sailing experience whether it is "having a go" dingy sailing, a day
charter on a larger boat or a whole week living aboard.
Pattaya
Day, weekend and longer sailing charters are available through various
agencies. Rates average at around Baht 1,500 per person per day and day
trips consist of visits to nearby islands such as Koh Rin, Koh Phai, Koh
Sichang and Koh Larn. Longer charters to Koh Samet and across the gulf to
Hua Hin, Koh Samui and the Similian Islands are also popular.
For smaller boats, the most popular rentals are Lasers, Prindles and
Hobie Cats and sailing can be enjoyed year-round.
For sailing lessons, contact the Royal Varuna Yacht Club at Tel:
(038)251-115. The Yacht Club has weekly races. Alternatively, try the
school on the Huay Saak Nok Reservoir. To get there, turn left into the
lane at KM 150 on the Sukhumvit Road, next to the Green Way Golf Driving
Range, and drive for about 4 kilometers. A variety of different types of
aquatic sports are available here with instruction including windsurfing,
sailing, paramotors and para-gliders. Courses certified by The Royal Yacht
Association (RYC), a renowned British Institution, are available.
Restaurant facilities are available and canoes, catamarans and kayaks are
also available for rent. Hay Saak Nok is a large reservoir totalling an
area of 448 acres and between the months of November and February
thousands of teals, swallows, and herons migrate to this area. Telephone
Mr Bumrung Ruamsap at 01-3544986 or 9467859, for additional information.
Phuket
Sailing is a popular way to access the many islands surrounding Phuket and
in the Andaman Sea. Sailing in the waters surrounding Phuket and even as
far south as Langkawi in Malaysia or north into the Mergui Archipelago in
Myanmar (Burma), is a dream for many visitors to Thailand. You can rent
anything from bareboats to fully equipped and staffed yachts. Also many of
the dive shops offer diving trips to these areas on their liveaboards
Phuket also hosts the annual Kings Cup Regatta in December.
Samui
Samui has an excellent weather conditions for sailing. There is a good all year
round breeze which is a solid north-easterly between December and April
and a more challenging strong westerly with the occasional violent gust
between May and November. Craft available for a day on the ocean waves
include yachts, catamarans and more modest windsurf boards.
