Postal Services

The postal services in Thailand are well organised and cheap. You can purchase stamps at post offices, hotels and many convenience stores. It takes approximately a week for airmail letters sent at the standard rate to reach the USA or Europe or America.

It is not recommended to send parcels or high value items by regular post, slightly more you can use the registered Express Mail Service (EMS). The charge is dependant on whether you send the parcel airmail or surface mail and the destination, size and wight. Parcels must be wrapped in the approved packaging but this can be done at the post office for a small charge.

Mail box facilities are available at all the main post offices throughout the country. You will be charged a small fee and need to show your passport. You should ask the people writing to put your sir-name in capitals and underline it as the mail may be filed under your first name instead of your sir-name.

The Central Post Office in Thailand is located on Charoen Krung (New) Road, Bangkok. The main post offices are open from 8.00 am to 8.00 pm Monday to Friday and 8.00 am to 1.00 pm on weekends and public holidays. Small branches are open from 8.00 am to 4.30 pm on weekdays, and 9.00 am to 12.00 am on Saturdays.

In most tourist centres and hotels, international direct dialing telephone services are available. In the main cities and tourist destinations there are many internet cafes with inexpensive internet connection available. It is harder to find internet access in remote areas.
